Newsletter Term Four Week Four

Dear Parents, Carers, Staff and Students,

Returning to St Anthony’s after a period of leave brings a deep joy in reconnecting with our community. With the support of the Catholic Education Office, I was blessed to embark on a spiritual sabbatical, which provided valuable time for prayer and reflection. This period allowed me to renew my spirit and refocus on our mission as a Catholic school community.

I would like to extend my sincere appreciation to Mrs. Julieann Ferguson and the school’s leadership team for their dedicated support and guidance in upholding the school’s mission and ensuring a positive environment for all students and staff. Their commitment to fostering a strong, collaborative school culture has been invaluable to our community.

Last Friday 1 November we celebrated All Saints' Day with a very moving liturgy. The liturgy led by Mrs Julie Smith, the Year Six Spirituality team and Year Four White reminded us that in the Catholic tradition, November is traditionally a month of remembrance. The month begins with the Solemnity of All Saints on 1 November and the Commemoration of the Faithful Departed-All Souls Day on 2 November. Although many of the known saints have their own feast day during the year, on November 1 the Catholic Church remembers them all through the Solemnity of All Saints.

The gospel reading on Friday was the famous scripture passage, ‘The Beatitudes’. During this passage Jesus uses that lovely phrase, ‘Blessed are they …’ which is sometimes translated to ‘Happy are they …’. On Friday, after the liturgy I reflected on how “Happy are we …’ to have so many people who give so generously to the life of St Anthony’s.

Happy are we … to have parents and carers who actively engage and are so                                    supportive of our  school.

Happy are we … for a staff who are dedicated and caring.

Happy are we … for our students. They are the very reason we do what we do!

Warm regards,

Justin Devlin

Principal

Overwhelming Thoughts of Dynasty

Nicholaz Sanchez

St. Anthony’s Catholic Primary School Picton

Year Six

My artwork is titled Overwhelming Thoughts of Dynasty. This piece captures the overwhelming stress that Mary would have felt after being told she would be spiritually gifted a child inspired by the scripture passage The Annunciation (Luke 1:26-36). A responsibility both sacred and daunting. The weight of her destiny, the pressure of carrying such a profound role, and the uncertainty of the future are conveyed through the use of dark, swirling colours that represent her inner turmoil. The subtle glow around her figure hints at the divine nature of her experience, while the sharp, jagged lines symbolise the anxiety and fear that come with such a life-altering revelation.

I’ve drawn this with black and blue pen which makes this piece more dramatic. And the way I  implemented these qualities was through a darker perspective. I am inspired by Mary as she managed to work through her feelings and emotions and make peace with the situation and work through it. I hope I, too, can do this at a deeper spiritual level.

The Importance of a Good Diet - What’s in our Lunchboxes at School?

It’s easy to overlook just how much our diet impacts our overall health, but what we eat can play a big role in how we feel, think, and even learn. No judgement here - we know everyone’s busy, and we’re all doing our best. We’re not suggesting your child needs a fancy, gourmet meal every day, but what goes into those lunchboxes plays a bigger role than we might realise!

The Gut-Brain Axis (Simplified!)

Ever heard of the gut-brain axis? It’s a fancy term, but all it means is that the brain and gut are connected. Think of your gut like a second brain - it influences how you think, your mood, and how you focus in class. A healthy gut supports better concentration and less stress, which is exactly what our kids need to thrive at school. When we fuel the gut with nutritious foods, it sends all the right signals to the brain, helping them stay sharp and alert.

Why a Good Diet Matters for Learning

The right foods can help kids focus, process information better, and even improve memory. On the flip side, foods high in sugar, unhealthy fats, and additives can have the opposite effect. You might notice your child becoming more irritable or tired after lunch, and that may be because their body is struggling to process sugar etc.

For example, sugary snacks give a quick burst of energy but lead to an energy crash soon after, leaving kids feeling sluggish and unfocused. Foods like chips, sugary drinks, and pastries can also affect mood and behaviour, leading to restlessness or lack of concentration. On the other hand, whole grains, lean proteins, fruits, and vegetables provide steady energy throughout the day, supporting better focus and learning.

What Should Be in Our Lunchboxes?

A good lunch doesn’t have to be complicated. Simple swaps can make a big difference. Overall, try including the following:

  • Proteins such as chicken, turkey, or plant-based options like beans or tofu to support brain function.
  • Whole grains like whole wheat bread or brown rice to keep energy levels steady.
  • Fruits and veggies for essential vitamins and fibre to keep the gut and brain working well together.
  • Healthy fats like avocado, which is great for brain health and learning.

Snack Ideas that support concentration and sensory regulation (Occupational Therapist approved!)

Depending on your child's sensory needs, some may seek out sensory input through their food e.g. crunchy foods like carrots, cucumber, or crackers (which is often the case for our kids with ADHD!) It can be useful to incorporate snacks that suit your child's sensory needs and improve focus and concentration.

Crunchy Snacks:

  • Carrot sticks, celery, and cucumber slices: The crunchy texture can help with focus.
  • Whole-grain crackers or rice cakes: These are great for energy and concentration, with added fibre for steady blood sugar levels.
  • Apple slices or pears: Both crunchy and naturally sweet, making them a healthy alternative to sugary snacks that our kids often crave.
  • Popcorn: A light and crunchy snack that keeps kids engaged without too much sugar or unhealthy fat.

Protein-Packed Snacks:

  • Nuts or trail mix (for kids without allergies): Protein helps with brain function and can keep energy levels stable throughout the day.
  • Cheese sticks or slices: Packed with protein and healthy fats, cheese is a simple, portable snack for concentration.
  • Boiled eggs: These are easy to prepare and a great source of protein to keep kids full and focused.

Energy-Boosting Options:

  • Greek yoghurt with berries: Full of protein and probiotics, it’s great for gut health, which can help concentration.
  • Nut butter on apple slices or whole grain toast: A perfect mix of healthy fats and fibre for sustained energy.
  • Hummus with veggie sticks: A delicious way to sneak in some extra fibre and protein.

By making mindful choices about what’s in our kids' lunchboxes, we’re setting them up for success throughout the day. Healthy, balanced meals help keep them focused, energised, and ready to take on the school day!

Sacramental Programs

Religious Education is a priority in Catholic schools. It provides the knowledge and understanding of the Catholic faith and outlines what is needed to live a Catholic life. Sacramental programs are Parish based, Parish coordinated, family focused and school supported.

Each year the Sacraments of Penance, Eucharist and Confirmation are celebrated in the Parish.

A Parish based program caters to the needs of all participants. In this way children from all schools receive the same preparation for each sacrament.

The Parish based, family focused approach to Sacramental programs is widely used throughout Australia as the preferred approach. This approach acknowledges the important role of parents and families in the whole preparation process. Parents are the first educators of children in the faith and traditions of the Catholic Church. Parents involvement in Sacramental preparation is crucial in shaping the values and attitudes of each child. So it is vital, for the continual spiritual growth of the child, that the families involve themselves in the Sacramental life of Parish.
