Dear Parents, Carers, Staff and Students,
In the wider community this week we celebrate two significant events, Child Protection Week and on Thursday 10 September, R U OK! Day.
Our Director of Schools, Mr Peter Hill expresses very clearly the importance of Child Protection Week. He writes “This week is Child Protection Week and the theme is Putting Children First, something our schools do each and every day. Child Protection Week provides the opportunity to recognise and affirm each and every member of our school community who offers care and concern to our students; and the many people who make extraordinary efforts in the pastoral care and support of our students, their safety and wellbeing. This work is never easy or simple. Nevertheless, the dedication and efforts of many people working together, putting children first, means that we are better able to assist with our students’ safety and wellbeing.”
In speaking about safety and wellbeing, Thursday’s R U Ok! day focuses on encouraging us to take time and connect with friends, family, and colleagues. It's about LISTENING, ENCOURAGING ACTION, and then STAYING CONNECTED, because research indicates that genuine care and concern can make a real difference. In scripture we read that “we need to be kind to one another, and tenderhearted.” (Ephesians 4:32) To have a kind heart means to ask the difficult question, R u OK? unsure of what the response will be. The challenge starts with asking the question.
This Thursday is also my first appraisal as the Principal of St Anthony’s. This is my third year as the Principal of this fine community and I am looking forward to the whole process. In some ways it is quite amusing that it falls on R U OK? day and after Thursday I may need to be checked to see if I am OK. In all seriousness I see the appraisal process as an opportunity to seek feedback both positive and constructive, in order for me to better serve the school and Parish community.
As we face the final three weeks of this term, may I ask that we all take some time to be present to each other, ask the question and stay connected.
Please continue to stay safe and healthy.
Take Care
Mr Justin Devlin
Principal
St Anthony’s are about to lodge a DA with Wollondilly Council to have an Electronic Sign installed at the front gate entrance and to help with the cost we have approached Nathaniel Smith (Member for Wollondilly Parliament of NSW) in regards to a grant for funding from the NSW Government which will go towards purchasing and installing the sign. The electronic sign will be another exciting way we can communicate to families and the Wollondilly community, while at the same time celebrating the amazing work and achievements of our students.
To support the application, Nathaniel Smith has asked for a petition to be signed by as many St Anthony’s family members, extended family, friends, neighbours and Wollondilly residents as possible.
Please take a moment to sign the attached petition below (via link) and feel free to pass it to family members. Petition will close on Thursday 10 September, 2020.

18 months ago we introduced our new school hat to St Anthony's with the expectation that every student will be wearing the new hat by 2021. This plan is still very much in action and we would like parents to consider buying a new hat from the uniform shop before the end of this year. Thank you for your support.
In term four students will return to school in their summer uniform, therefore this is a friendly reminder to order any uniforms your child may need before the end of term three. A uniform order form is attached to this newsletter in the 'Uniform Shop' tab.
The back gate will be locked at no later than 9:05 am every morning. Any child arriving after this time will need to be brought to the front office by their parent/carer to receive a late note.
TerraCycle and Kwik Lok have partnered to create a free recycling program for used bread bag closures. Once collected, the bread closures are cleaned and melted into hard plastic that can be remoulded to make new recycled products.
Collect your bread clips at home, ask family members to do the same and then once a month send them in to school when you see a “Collection” notice in the newsletter.
Another simple way we can all make a difference!

On Wednesday 2 September it was Indigenous Literacy Day, which highlights the struggles Indigenous children have with reading and writing. Jessica Mauboy is the ambassador for the day and helped put together a clip which was aired through the Sydney Opera House productions. Please click on the link below to view.
The P and F committee has placed a 'Suggestion Box' in the school office for parents, grandparents and students to place any suggestions or comments in writing. Your suggestions will be placed on the agenda and discussed at the next meeting.
NEXT P & F MEETING
The next P & F meeting will be held on Monday 26 October via zoom at 6:30 pm. Link will be available closer to the date.
Life presents us with many joys and challenges, it may be the birth of a child, the loss of employment or the death of a family member. We are privileged to, and benefit from, living in a community that cares for us, no matter what our circumstances. At times, we may find ourselves in a position where some extra care and support would be welcomed to help us through a period of hardship or need. If you are in need of support, please contact Sister Julie on 0418 674 452 who will respond to you confidentially.

Sacramental Programs
Religious Education is a priority in Catholic schools. It provides the knowledge and understanding of the Catholic faith and outlines what is needed to live a Catholic life. Sacramental programs are Parish based, Parish coordinated, family focused and school supported.
Each year the Sacraments of Penance, Eucharist and Confirmation are celebrated in the Parish.
- Year 2 Sacrament of Penance
- Year 3 Sacrament of the Eucharist
- Year 6 Sacrament of Confirmation
A Parish based program caters to the needs of all participants. In this way children from all schools receive the same preparation for each sacrament.
The Parish based, family focused approach to Sacramental programs is widely used throughout Australia as the preferred approach. This approach acknowledges the important role of parents and families in the whole preparation process. Parents are the first educators of children in the faith and traditions of the Catholic Church. Parents involvement in Sacramental preparation is crucial in shaping the values and attitudes of each child. So it is vital, for the continual spiritual growth of the child, that the families involve themselves in the Sacramental life of Parish.
The second Sacrament for 2020 will be Confirmation and dates are as follows;
- Session One - Week 9 (Term 3)
- Session Two - Week 10 (Term 3)
- Session Three - Week 1 (Term 4)
- Session Four - Week 2 (Term 4)
- Sacrament - Wednesday 4 November 6:30 pm
-
-Thursday 5 November 6:30 pm
-Friday 6 November 6:30 pm
The uniform shop will be open on Fridays from 9:00 am for orders that have been emailed or handed in to the office. Parents will NOT be allowed to enter the hall for any face to face purchases, as advised by the Catholic Education Office. Orders can be emailed to the school via info@sapdow.catholic.edu.au
A consent form for use of student's images was sent home to every family. Parents signing this form gives St Anthony's permission to celebrate their child's achievements in our newsletters, allows parents to view their child at sporting events or excursions, on posters around the school and Facebook with discretion. If you wish NOT to give permission for your child's image to be used in any of the points 1-6 please tick the NO box, sign and return the form back to school. If this option is picked OR if we Do Not receive a form back for your child, we will remove your child's image from any photo that will be used by St Anthony's. If you require another form please see attached.
