Newsletter Term Three Week Six

Dear Parents, Carers, Staff and Students,

Over the last week we have shared with the school community a new set of  Covid-19 directives, from NSW Health and the Diocese of Wollongong, that schools need to adhere to. I would like to take this opportunity to thank everyone for your continuous understanding and adapting to the constant changes as they come our way.

In times like these it can be challenging to remain positive and maintain an optimistic outlook. However we have certainly learnt that we can only focus on the things we can control. During these times I like to reflect on a prayer written in 1932 by Reinhold Niebuhr entitled “The Serenity Prayer”:

God, give me grace to accept with serenity

the things that cannot be changed,

Courage to change the things

which should be changed,

and the Wisdom to distinguish

the one from the other.

Amen.

In the weeks to come children from the parish, including students from Year Six, will begin to prepare for the Sacrament of Confirmation. During their preparation time they will learn about the ‘The Seven Gifts of The Holy Spirit’, including the gifts of wisdom and fortitude (courage). Pope Francis explains the gift of wisdom best: “it is the grace of being able to see everything with the eyes of God.” and the fortitude to see the face of God in others.

This awareness that God is in the relationship we have with each other allows us to be more accepting and supportive of each other. In some way may the comfort of this support for each other allow us all to seek what Frank Costanza from the show Seinfield would constantly call out, “Serenity now!”

Please continue to stay safe and healthy.

Take Care

Mr Justin Devlin

Principal

The back gate will be locked at no later than 9:05 am every morning. Any child arriving after this time will need to be brought to the front office by their parent/carer to receive a late note.

At the back gate during morning drop off, it has come to our attention that a number of students are not being supervised when walking from their car to the back gate. This is a major concern due to the lack of visibility of traffic coming around the corner from St Mary Mackillop lane and looking to park. I cannot emphasise enough the importance of  supervising children all the way from getting out of their car to the back gate. The safe arrival of our students to school should be a high priority for  the whole school community.

I thank you in advance for your support.

TerraCycle and Kwik Lok have partnered to create a free recycling program for used bread bag closures. Once collected, the bread closures are cleaned and melted into hard plastic that can be remoulded to make new recycled products.

Collect your bread clips at home, ask family members to do the same and then once a month send them in to school when you see a “Collection” notice in the newsletter.

Another simple way we can all make a difference!

Some classes celebrated Science Week last week and the students enjoyed exploring science through experiments and technology.

Year 1

Kindergarten

Year One celebrated a lovely Liturgy together on Friday, 21 August. Celina, Sophie.T, Will, Cooper, Abigail and Mate did a wonderful job leading us in prayer. Although we were in the classroom and not in our Church, the children remained very reverent knowing that Jesus is always in our hearts.

The children of the St Anthony’s Parish celebrated the Sacrament of Reconciliation. We pray that through Reconciliation the children will experience a sense of peace from admitting things they are sorry for, saying sorry and hearing the words of forgiveness. We would like to thank the Parish and school for the work that they have done in partnership with the families to prepare the children for the celebration of the Sacrament.

A Prayer for our Reconciliation Candidates

Loving God,

Help us to teach our children that you love us totally and unconditionally. Help us to encourage our children to grow in love and to learn how to say sorry, knowing that you always forgive. Give us the courage to pray with our children and to share our faith with them as we journey together. We ask this through Christ our Lord.

 Amen

Life presents us with many joys and challenges, it may be the birth of a child, the loss of employment or the death of a family member. We are privileged to, and benefit from, living in a community that cares for us, no matter what our circumstances. At times, we may find ourselves in a position where some extra care and support would be welcomed to help us through a period of hardship or need. If you are in need of support, please contact Sister Julie on 0418 674 452 who will respond to you confidentially.

Sacramental Programs

Religious Education is a priority in Catholic schools. It provides the knowledge and understanding of the Catholic faith and outlines what is needed to live a Catholic life. Sacramental programs are Parish based, Parish coordinated, family focused and school supported.

Each year the Sacraments of Penance, Eucharist and Confirmation are celebrated in the Parish.

  • Year 2 Sacrament of Penance
  • Year 3 Sacrament of the Eucharist
  • Year 6 Sacrament of Confirmation

A Parish based program caters to the needs of all participants. In this way children from all schools receive the same preparation for each sacrament.

The Parish based, family focused approach to Sacramental programs is widely used throughout Australia as the preferred approach. This approach acknowledges the important role of parents and families in the whole preparation process. Parents are the first educators of children in the faith and traditions of the Catholic Church. Parents involvement in Sacramental preparation is crucial in shaping the values and attitudes of each child. So it is vital, for the continual spiritual growth of the child, that the families involve themselves in the Sacramental life of Parish.

The uniform shop will be open on Fridays from 9:00 am for orders that have been emailed or handed in to the office. Parents will NOT be allowed to enter the hall for any face to face  purchases, as advised by the Catholic Education Office. Orders can be emailed to the school via info@sapdow.catholic.edu.au

A consent form for use of student's images was sent home to every family. Parents signing this form gives St Anthony's permission to celebrate their child's achievements in our newsletters, allows parents to view their child at sporting events or excursions, on posters around the school and Facebook with discretion. If you wish NOT to give permission for your child's image to be used in any of the points 1-6 please tick the NO box, sign and return the form back to school. If this option is picked OR if we Do Not receive a form back for your child, we will remove your child's image from any photo that will be used by St Anthony's. If you require another form please see attached.
