Newsletter Term One Week Four

Dear Parents, Carers, Staff and Students,

Over the past five days we have been provided with two key opportunities for the community of St Anthony's to join together in Eucharist. Firstly at our Opening School Mass last Friday and on Sunday when we had the pleasure to join with the parish community in celebrating the installation of Fr Peter as the Parish Priest of St Anthony’s Picton. On both of these occasions as we come together in  Eucharist, we come together to give thanks for the community that we are so blessed to belong too.

Bishop Brian celebrated the Mass for Fr Peter and spoke about how the reading from the Gospel of Matthew, that was read on Sunday, speaks very much to the heart of how we act as human beings. In this reading Jesus reminds us that it is our words, and our actions, that determines the relationship that we have with others. At the very heart of our words and actions is our school mission statement:

With Christ as our model,

we the school community of St Anthony of Padua,

in partnership with the parish,

strive to provide quality Catholic education

in the spirit and charism of St Mary Mackillop,

whilst living by our school motto

"Grow in Respect and Honesty"

This statement is who we are. This gives us all … students, parents, carers, staff ... the clarity of understanding in determining our expectations when relating with each other. As a school community we need to join together to “be community”. This was never more evident than on the weekend when families supported Fr Peter’s Mass. The beautiful choir, liturgical dancers and students who came along with their families and the high number of staff was very much appreciated by the parish community and especially by Fr Peter.

We also look forward to our ‘Welcome To St Anthony’s Colour Explosion Day’ on Friday 28 February. Whilst the fundraising component of our day is important, at the the very core of this day is to come together as a community, to say welcome and most importantly have some fun. We all look forward to a great day.

Sacramental Programs

Religious Education is a priority in Catholic schools. It provides the knowledge and understanding of the Catholic faith and outlines what is needed to live a Catholic life. Sacramental programs are Parish based, Parish coordinated, family focused and school supported.

Each year the Sacraments of Penance, Eucharist and Confirmation are celebrated in the Parish.

  • Year 2 Sacrament of Penance
  • Year 3 Sacrament of the Eucharist
  • Year 6 Sacrament of Confirmation

A Parish based program caters to the needs of all participants. In this way children from all schools receive the same preparation for each sacrament.

The Parish based, family focused approach to Sacramental programs is widely used throughout Australia as the preferred approach. This approach acknowledges the important role of parents and families in the whole preparation process. Parents are the first educators of children in the faith and traditions of the Catholic Church. Parents involvement in Sacramental preparation is crucial in shaping the values and attitudes of each child. So it is vital, for the continual spiritual growth of the child, that the families involve themselves in the Sacramental life of Parish.

St Anthony's first Sacrament for 2020 will be the Sacrament of the Eucharist. Dates are as follows;

Parent Meeting - Tuesday 5 May 2.00pm

       OR

Parent Meeting - Wednesday 6 May 7.30pm

Uniform Notifications

My sincere thanks for your efforts in ensuring that your children are wearing the correct school uniform and are equipped ready for the school year. We have received many positive comments regarding how smart the students look in their uniforms. I would like to acknowledge the dedicated work of our uniform shop volunteers who give so generously of their time.

Attached to this newsletter is our Uniform Policy Document. The key aspects of the school uniform that I would like to highlight are:

Haircuts

Students are required to wear their hair in a neat and tidy manner. Haircuts should be of an even grace. Hair should be well brushed and combed and it is assumed that hair will not be in such a condition as to invite comment, as per our policy.

School Shoes

Students are required to wear black leather shoes (not black canvas shoes or boots) and during sport days, joggers that are predominantly white.

Socks

Students are required to wear grey socks and during sport days white socks that are worn just above the ankles (not anklet socks). Please note that in preparation for the winter uniform in Term Two, girls will be permitted to wear long blue socks or stockings. The socks will be able to be purchased from the school uniform shop.

Smartwatches

With the ever evolving technology that we now have access to, the use of Smartwatches is a matter that we need to address. As per my correspondence at the beginning of the year, if your child is wearing a smartwatch to school, the protocols will be the same as per our student phone guidelines. Students will be expected to place their watch in the designated box in the classroom at the beginning of the day and be able to collect the watch at the end of the day.
