Newsletter Term One Week Two

Dear Parents, Carers, Staff and Students,

Welcome back to school. It is always such a blessing to be surrounded by such welcoming and happy, smiling faces on returning to a new year at school. We understand that for some families the holiday break was not a relaxing time and therefore at morning assembly we have focused the dedication of our school prayer to those families who have, and continue to be, affected by the devastating fires. During the holiday break the school community led by our Parents & Friends were able to organise a donation drive. We were overwhelmed and somewhat humbled by the generosity of our community to help those in need. The charism of St Mary Mackillop was certainly alive and living in action during this time.

Our focus during the first days of school has been to revisit our expectations of being Respectful … Respectful to Ourselves, Respectful to Others, Respectful to Property and Respectful to our Learning. As a school we have focused on understanding what the word respectful looks like, sounds like and feels like. Our patron saint, St Anthony of Padua wrote, “Actions speak louder than words; let your words teach and your actions speak.” For our whole school community the sense of action for the benefit of others will certainly be a whole school focus in 2020.

A very special welcome to all those who have selected St Anthony’s Catholic Parish Primary School for their child’s education commencing this year. We are glad to have you join our school and parish family. I would like to warmly welcome our new staff members, Miss Ashleigh Pace and Mrs Lauren Thorp to our school community.  Please know that your presence amongst us adds to the richness of our school.

For me St Anthony’s is about building on the sense of community. A key aspect of our school is to work in partnership to ensure that the children are at the very heart of all that we do and that they continue to learn in a safe and supportive environment.  That they have opportunities to explore their faith and learn about themselves while interacting positively with their peers. As we begin the new year let us pray:

Prayer For the New School Year

"God of wisdom

Be with our children as they begin a new school year.

Bless them and their teachers and staff.

Give them the strength and grace as their bodies grow;

wisdom and knowledge to their minds as they search for understanding;

and peace in their hearts.

We ask this through Jesus Christ our Lord.

Amen."

Take Care

Mr Justin Devlin

At the end of Term 4 2019 we hosted a cupcake stall and students brought in a gold coin donation to raise money for the bushfires. We are delighted to announce that with your help we raised $1000.00, which was donated to The Oakdale RFS.

The Sisters of St Joseph's made a generous donation, which will be used to support families in the local area over the coming month.

In the school holidays St Anthony's held a Donation Drive to assist families who had been affected by the bushfires. Thank you to everyone for your support and the enormous amount of household items that were donated.

Listed below are the details of where the donations went:

On Thursday 6 February staff, students and families will welcome 55 Kindergarten students for their first day of primary school at St Anthony's. Kindergarten students are to wear their full school uniform on Thursday. After parents and grandparents have said goodbye to their child, you are welcome to join us in the school hall for morning tea from 9:15 am.

Uniform Notifications

My sincere thanks for your efforts in ensuring that your children are wearing the correct school uniform and are equipped ready for the school year. We have received many positive comments regarding how smart the students look in their uniforms. I would like to acknowledge the dedicated work of our uniform shop volunteers who give so generously of their time. Last week the shop was open Wednesday, Thursday and Friday due to the wonderful support of our dedicated parents.

Attached to this newsletter is our Uniform Guidelines. The key aspects of the school uniform that I would like to highlight are:

Haircuts

Students are required to wear their hair in a neat and tidy manner. Haircuts should be of an even grace. Hair should be well brushed and combed and it is assumed that hair will not be in such a condition as to invite comment, as per our policy.

School Shoes

Students are required to wear black leather shoes (not black canvas shoes or boots) and during sport days, joggers that are predominantly white.

Socks

Students are required to wear grey socks and during sport days white socks that are worn just above the ankles (not anklet socks). Please note that in preparation for the winter uniform in Term Two, girls will blue permitted to wear long blue socks or stockings. The socks will be able to be purchased from the school uniform shop.

Smartwatches

With the ever evolving technology that we now have access to, the use of Smartwatches is a matter that we need to address. If your child is wearing a smartwatch to school, the protocols will be the same as per our student phone guidelines. Students will be expected to place their watch in the designated box in the classroom at the beginning of the day and be able to collect the watch at the end of the day.

Sports day for all students (K-Yr6) will be on Tuesday and Thursday.

Library day for students will be as follows:

Tuesday Yr1, Yr2 and Yr6R

Wednesday Yr4 and Kinder

Thursday Yr5, Yr3 and Yr6W

Sacramental Programs

Religious Education is a priority in Catholic schools. It provides the knowledge and understanding of the Catholic faith and outlines what is needed to live a Catholic life. Sacramental programs are Parish based, Parish coordinated, family focused and school supported.

Each year the Sacraments of Penance, Eucharist and Confirmation are celebrated in the Parish.

  • Year 2 Sacrament of Penance
  • Year 3 Sacrament of the Eucharist
  • Year 6 Sacrament of Confirmation

A Parish based program caters to the needs of all participants. In this way children from all schools receive the same preparation for each sacrament.

The Parish based, family focused approach to Sacramental programs is widely used throughout Australia as the preferred approach. This approach acknowledges the important role of parents and families in the whole preparation process. Parents are the first educators of children in the faith and traditions of the Catholic Church. Parents involvement in Sacramental preparation is crucial in shaping the values and attitudes of each child. So it is vital, for the continual spiritual growth of the child, that the families involve themselves in the Sacramental life of Parish.
