Newsletter Term One Week Ten

Dear Parents, Carers, Staff and Students,

This week, as we head towards our Easter break, the whole school community has had the opportunity to ‘walk with Jesus’, as we participate in the events of Holy Week. Our Stations Of The Cross Liturgy this Thursday will provide the students with a deeper understanding of what Jesus experienced as he moved from the triumphant entry on Palm Sunday, to Him being put to death on Good Friday and then to the joyful experience of the resurrection on Easter Sunday. Our Bishop, Bishop Brian reminds us, “Let us continue to pray, reflect and encounter the passion, death and resurrection of Jesus and allow this mystery to draw us deeper into the great love that God has for us.”

Today was a good day in the life of St Anthony’s! To observe the joy, to listen to the conversation and to feel the sense of community as the students participated in our Cross Country Carnival was a  pleasure to be  a part of. A big thank you to all the volunteers and parents who observed our Covid directives and came along to support the children. I would also like to acknowledge our wonderful staff, led by our sports committee, who organised a well run carnival. A great day was enjoyed by all.

Finally, I would like to acknowledge the wonderful kind words of encouragement from the parent community. Your support and gratitude is much needed and very much appreciated. I wish all our families a restful Easter break and pray that we are able to spend time in prayer and reflection.

Take Care

Justin Devlin

Principal

Last Friday, 4 students from our Year 6 Environment Team attended the first Wollongong Environment Network Day for primary students. We were asked to give a presentation on our gardens and composting system. The students were also interviewed by the local newspaper and the Catholic Education Office. Jade, Nevaeh, Bella and Ruby spoke so well and represented our school with great pride. They had the opportunity to talk with other students from our Wollongong Diocese about how we can better care and act for creation within our school communities. The girls even learnt how to make their own ‘No Sew T-Shirt Bag’ that they now want to teach other students how to make. We would like to thank Mrs Fleming for her assistance on the day too.

The National Assessment Program – Literacy and Numeracy (NAPLAN) is a point in time assessment of literacy and numeracy skills that are essential for every child to progress through school and life. Students in Years 3, 5, 7 and 9 participate in the annual NAPLAN tests in writing, reading, conventions of language (spelling, grammar and punctuation) and numeracy.

Our school will be participating in NAPLAN Online between 11 and 21 May 2021

In preparation for NAPLAN Online, our school will also be participating in practice tests between 22 March and 1 April. The practice test is a trial-run and key preparation activity for NAPLAN Online in May. It is not an assessment of student ability and the tests will not be marked.

Excessive preparation for NAPLAN Online is not recommended. Students can use the public demonstration site (https://www.nap.edu.au/online-assessment/public-demonstration-site) to familiarise themselves with the types of questions and tools available in the NAPLAN Online tests.

If you have any questions about NAPLAN Online, please contact the school office.

P & F MEETING

We invite all St Anthony's parents, carers and friends to join our P & F for a meeting on Monday 3 May at 6:30 pm in the school library.

Life presents us with many joys and challenges, it may be the birth of a child, the loss of employment or the death of a family member. We are privileged to, and benefit from, living in a community that cares for us, no matter what our circumstances. At times, we may find ourselves in a position where some extra care and support would be welcomed to help us through a period of hardship or need. If you are in need of support, please contact Sister Julie on 0418 674 452 who will respond to you confidentially.

Those preceding him as well as those following kept crying out:

  “Hosanna!

Blessed is he who comes in the name of the Lord!

Blessed is the kingdom of our father David that is to come!

Hosanna in the highest!” Mark 11:9–10

As we enter into the holiest week of the year, it is essential that each of us see the journey of Christ this week as our own calling in life. Commit yourself to share in the events of this week, not just as an intellectual remembrance but as a living participation. We are called to consider:

How is God calling me to step forward in a sacrificial way out of love?

How is God calling me to courageously embrace my calling to give?

Strive to see this week from the perspective of the Father in Heaven and pray that you will also see the ways in which the Father is calling you to imitate His Son. Let us go and die with Him, for it is in the Cross of Christ that we will discover His eternal glory.

This week students K-6 will participate in an ancient prayer, the Way of the Cross, to remember the events of the last few hours of Jesus’ life. To remember the incredible sorrow, pain and love that led Jesus on to his death . . . where he died for us. Together we will be there as Jesus makes his journey to his Father.

(Due to Covid restrictions parents are unable to attend, with the exception of students who are reading.)

Sacramental Programs

Religious Education is a priority in Catholic schools. It provides the knowledge and understanding of the Catholic faith and outlines what is needed to live a Catholic life. Sacramental programs are Parish based, Parish coordinated, family focused and school supported.

Each year the Sacraments of Penance, Eucharist and Confirmation are celebrated in the Parish.

  • Year 2 Sacrament of Penance
  • Year 3 Sacrament of the Eucharist
  • Year 6 Sacrament of Confirmation

A Parish based program caters to the needs of all participants. In this way children from all schools receive the same preparation for each sacrament.

The Parish based, family focused approach to Sacramental programs is widely used throughout Australia as the preferred approach. This approach acknowledges the important role of parents and families in the whole preparation process. Parents are the first educators of children in the faith and traditions of the Catholic Church. Parents involvement in Sacramental preparation is crucial in shaping the values and attitudes of each child. So it is vital, for the continual spiritual growth of the child, that the families involve themselves in the Sacramental life of Parish.

St Anthony's first Sacrament for 2021 will be the Sacrament of the Eucharist. Dates are as follows;

Parent Meeting - Tuesday 4 May 2.00pm or 7:30 pm

       OR

Parents will NOT be allowed to enter the hall for any face to face  purchases, as advised by the Catholic Education Office. Orders can be emailed to the school via info@sapdow.catholic.edu.au

Every year, by law, we have to receive consent from parents to photograph and use images of your child. The photos taken will be displayed in newsletters and/or Facebook to celebrate the fun times and achievements of students. Consent forms have been sent home today with your child, if you consent or do not consent to your child's photo being taken please tick the appropriate box and return the form to school.

If we do not receive a form for your child we will not include your child in photos.
